LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL FIRM RENEWS PATENT LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH NASA FOR EZVI

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Toxicological & Environmental Associates, Inc. (TEA), a full-service environmental consulting firm based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with affiliated offices in Mobile, Alabama, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Pittsburg, California, announces the renewal of a licensing agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for Emulsified Zero Valent Iron (EZVI), a product used to remediate contaminated groundwater.

The cleanup of impacted groundwater resources in our community and throughout the United States and abroad continue to be of concern to the public, industry, and government. In recent years, new cleanup technologies have been developed to aid in the remediation of aquifer resources. However, many challenges to groundwater cleanup still remain, especially as it relates to resources impacted by chlorinated organic compounds such as dry cleaner solvents (perchloroethene, trichloroethene, etc.).

EZVI uses an emulsion of nanoscale iron, surfactant, oil, and water to chemically oxidize chlorinated solvent source areas in the subsurface. The material is mixed above ground and injected directly into known areas of high concentration of contaminant. In this way, cleanup of contaminated plumes that may have taken decades or longer can be expedited.

Dr. Brad Droy, President and Chief Executive Officer of TEA, states “This NASA patented technology fits very well with our core competencies in geology, chemistry, toxicology, and environmental engineering and will enable our scientists and engineers to bring yet another cutting-edge technology to our clients in industry and government as we continue to develop cleanup processes that are protective of human health and the environment.” TEA has successfully used EZVI at sites in Louisiana, Florida and Arkansas. To date, TEA has produced and injected over 65,000 gallons of EZVI.
