Human Health And Ecological Risk Assessment

Regulatory agencies and the general public have become increasingly concerned about the health effects of chemicals released into the environment. Toxicological & Environmental Associates, Inc. (TEA) is responding to these concerns by providing technical consulting services in human health and ecological risk assessment. Our experience with various EPA regions allows us to share information on the most up-to-date risk assessment techniques with state agencies who have more limited resources. This is an advantage to our clients.

Risk assessment is a method to evaluate the potential risks to humans and the environment due to the production, storage, use, and disposal of chemicals which may be released into the environment. It is also used to identify cleanup goals for environmental media affected by chemical releases. TEA's risk assessments are based on real-world site-specific information as compared to "worst case" regulatory risk assessments. Negotiation based on technically sound risk assessments results in more realistic cleanup goals that are reflective of actual risks.

Risk Assessments are used to:

  • Determine the need for remedial action of identified sources and the level of cleanup required;
  • Develop cleanup goals where standards have not been set or seek variances from existing standards through Agency negotiation;
  • Compare the impacts of alternative remedial methods;
  • Evaluate remedial technologies according to their ability to prevent or control risk;
  • Select sites and support permit applications for manufacturing plants, incinerators, landfills, or other hazardous materials management facilities;
  • Provide product risk assessments for pre-manufacturing notification; and
  • Provide a scientific basis for a corporate risk management program.

The benefits of risk assessment include the ability to design an effective remedial program at a cost often lower than generic regulatory guidance would allow.
